Emergent gameplay, Cinema Sol - 2018-03-19 - Entry 1521 - TOGoS's Journal

I had played a Luke-like character in a couple of new Star Wars movies. Or was it video games. I was walking along a road (forest on the right, dropoff into a valley on the left) with a couple of ladies that I worked with on the engine with and we were having some disagreement about how to implement physics. One of them wanted to define every possible interaction in the type system. I thought it better to make some simple physical rules and let the more complex interactions emerge from that. As an example I sat on a concrete ledge and talked about how the ledge didn't have to be declared ISittable or anything. It just happened to be a shape that I could drape my legs over, and players being able to do things that we didn't imagine would lead to more interesting things happening in the game.

I was going to a movie theater with Sara to watch the new movie that I was in. The movie theater was on the sun! Some kind of force field keeps the hotness out. Also the operator could turn down the sun to make it smaller so that we were orbiting above the visible surface instead of under it, which allowed him to turn down the force field. But then we almost hit a big wave of sun, so he quick turned the force field back on and was like "I'm calling my banker!" (to complain).
