A-Day's alive! - 2005-06-20 21:00 - Entry 672 - TOGoS's Journal

Apparently all I had to do was email him :P. Anyway, he ain't going to put this in his LJ, so I'll post it here.

i write this message now in links and netmail looks pretty wierd, but it's netmail. i wish i'd have gotten online further but i've been really busy. the story goes: i was home for two weeks, then in a MN hotel for two weeks, then in my apt. after the first week of hotel stay, i began work. i nearly took my landlord to small claims court because he was being so slow with getting me into the apt and the hotel isn't cheap. but anyways, work is really neat. we have LAN parties on our hour long lunches. someone at random sets up a Jedi Academy server (Jedi Academy is a first person shooter like Tribes, but dumbed down and with magic Force powers like choke, lightning, heal, and ridiculous jumping, like jump jets, just no fancy armor. fun) and then the rest of us, 4-6 or so, will join in for the fragging AND talk to each other using a voice server. we all talk to each other during the game using this other service. it's all pretty neat and i get to be THE GUY writing some simulation software for them. i get no direction really and just have to "make it work. oh yeah, and put some nice wizards in it too." mmmm, k. and interfacing with legacy software is gay especially when dlls are all over and gross, but i'm just beginning. oph yeah, and this links is running on my fresh new NetBSD box. It finally works! It wroks! It's like OpenBSD tries to be secure but isn't usable. FreeBSD tries to be aweomse but includes versions programs that don't work, like dhclient. NetBSD tries to work on everything, but since it's hugly multiplatform, it's very minimalist too, but they got a huge "packages" collection that is easy to use and make. Best of all, I now have full Suse Linux 9.1 comapatibilty (I think) and Folding@Home "just worked", first time, no shit. :-) I got a little firewall set up too. Just have to get all the boxen talking, and samba is already installed. It's been a trip and I have lots of space in this apt now so my machines are all spread out. I have a lot more to say, but I should really get working on this firewall more and setting up some private static IPs. Hope to see you in a week or two on GAIM. Oh yeah, and my windows box died a terrible hot death. There's burn marks on the processor too. Long story short, my Dad rebuilt it with parts I bought, installed SP XP 2, I tried it out here a couple days ago, no worky, on phone with MSFT and ISP for 2.5+ hrs, no solution found, but A-Lin and A-BSD work just fine. XP SP 2 is truly gay and Dad never touches my boxen again. Oi.

The Day
