Far Future Game Thing - 2016-10-11 - Entry 1440 - TOGoS's Journal

I was playing what I would describe as some far-future version of Game Thing. There were multiple towns scattered around this valley with railroad tracks connecting them, and I was in the process of connecting one of the last unconnected towns.

In parallel with that I was riding around on the trains and fixing things up here and there. One thing that bothered me was that there were several 90 degree bends in the track which the train jerked around in an unrealistic and visually displeasing fashion. But on the other hand, the ability to make such sharp turns was convenient, such as to go around the back side of a house near one town's train station where otherwise the tracks would have gone right across the front porch. There was some old man living there who liked to go out on his porch, which overlooked a river. The house also had a restaurant in it. The buildings in this town were all sort of old-fashioned, like this was the old west or New Glarus or something.

Later I was out at a low fence at the edge of some town (maybe the same one) trying to set up a wireless link to some radio tower on the horizon across a big flat desert. I was looking at it through binoculars and could just barely see it. There were some other towers off to the side that I didn't really know what they were, but that was interesting that they were there. I was having a little bit of trouble setting my antenna to point directly at the tower for some reason. Maybe because I was trying to set it up on the fence which wasn't entirely rigid. So I ended up a few hops (stretches of signal wire) outside the fence. Upon further inspection of the situation I realized that I was already more than halfway to the tower (which was now only about a hundred feet from the fence rather than on the horizon) and I may as well just run some proper cables over to it. "Can I just string some ethernet over there?" I asked my friends, who were nearby. Whether my network would actually be sending ethernet frames or if I'd need to create some kind of signal converter or just appropriate some of the unused Cat-5 wires was not stated, but I was mulling over the difficulty of building and programming a converter box. That shouldn't be too hard if I'm motivated to do it, I thought.

I had been thinking about how signals to control doors and lifts should work in Game21, so this dream was very relevant.
